Shoreline Management Organization (SMO)

Shoreline Management Organizations (SMO) are micro level community based organizations formed by local people who agree to work together on a voluntary basis and contribute to shoreline planning and management processes.

Mobilizing community support during and after construction of the project, maintaining the capital assets created under the project, taking up community actions related to emergency responses during natural calamities, directly taking up and/or promoting livelihood activities to assist the local community, taking up beach nourishment activities, community tourism are some of the roles and responsibilities envisaged.

The PMU has supported the formation of two SMOs (one in Ullal and the other in Bengre) under Tranche 1 and provided financial, technical, material and training support as start up efforts. The two SMOs have been registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1960. Under Tranche 2, the PMU has proposed the establishment at least one SMO in each sub- project site.

SMO created assets

Beach Cleaning, Ullal SMO

On Thursday 14th of September, 2017 Shoreline Management Organization of Ullal organized beach cleaning activity in collaboration with the Town Municipal Council, Ullal, Mogaveera Maha Sangha, Mogaveera Maha Sangha women. Around 65 school children, 35 women and 15 men participated. All the participants were given gloves and garbage bag/s. The Health Inspectors and Pourakarmikas ensured that the collected waste was transported to a different place and disposed.

Recently formed SMOs at the sub-projects sites are : Udyavara “Namma Beach”, Kodi Bengre “Nisarga Bengre”, Maravanthe “Kadala Sere” and Trasi “Namma Trasi Beach”.
